Research (What it is and its benefits)

The word research," functioning both as a noun and a verb has been in existence for quite a long time due to its extensive usage (verbal and inaction) since the existence of the human race.

Medical practitioners, engineers, lawyers, businessmen and women, students and scholars, programmers, designers, and any other occupation that crosses your mind conduct research to achieve one purpose or the other. This means nearly everyone has carried out an atom of research, but in various ways, using various means. That sounds cool, isn’t it?

What is Research?

Research is a creative and systematic work undertaken to increase the stock of knowledge, including the knowledge of humans, culture, society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications. - Wikipedia

The definition above captures the aspects of this investigation having to do with humans, cultures, and society. This is because humans, in their various communities and residing areas, have cultures and humans in accordance with these cultures make up society. So for research to be conducted, these 3 aspects must be considered.
Today, there are a lot of businesses, institutions, brands, histories, and facts that co-exist, and research has played a vital role in helping these bodies and entities stay strong even up to date. You will agree with me that regardless of the existence of Elon Musk’s Tesla cars, the famous German motoring company Mercedes Benz still produces one of the best cars in the world and has a wide market range with huge profits. This is also noticed and applicable to other bodies and businesses, professionals, and non-professionals. Carrying out research helps them perceive things differently and ignites their ideas into coming up with different solutions and samples for-same/different problems referencing the research they have carried out.

Why carry out Research?

Otherwise known as the benefits of conducting research. Research has played, is playing, and will continue to play essential roles in the development of the globe, and our civilization too. Research is crucial since it often serves to support theories, guide decisions, and advance knowledge in a variety of academic subjects.
Attributing reasons why research is important is a no-brainer, but yet a lot of people try so hard not to get involved in research activities.

Below are a few reasons and points why research is important and beneficial.

  1. To understand humans, their cultures, and society:
Referencing the definition above, research helps to have a better understanding of the human race, what and how things work for them, and how and why they perceive things the way they do. Research also helps to understand the various issues in societies and increase public awareness.

  2. To generate facts, truths, and prove lies: Have you ever been in a situation where you are curious about a certain thing or topic, and for some reason, there are no true or enough investigations and facts to help your curiosity?
Aha! You have been there too I bet. I thought as much too, and no problems if you haven’t been there. We were all once like you until our curiosities made us carry out research based on what brought forth that iota of doubt or misunderstanding towards certain topics. Research helps to reveal truths, prove lies and generate facts. Scientists also use research to test validity and reliability.
Although, in the world, we live in, not every research is accepted or learned by everyone due to certain factors such as religion, state suppression and access to resources and social services so as to either feed the poor minority with lies or deter them from knowing the truth to preserve the status quo.”- Source
Fact-checking to know the truth is integral to the research process, for it is fueled by an inquisitive and critical mind.

  3. To build knowledge through learning: Research is not only for students, scientists, scholars, businesses, etc. Research is for all, professionals and non-professionals.
Knowledge basically, pertains to facts based on objective insights and studies conducted by humans. It can be acquired through various ways such as reading books and articles, listening to experts, watching documentaries or investigating shows, conducting scientific experiments, and interacting with other people, among others. These facts can be checked to ensure truthfulness and accuracy.
Thus, learning via research is an essential component in building and generating knowledge.

  4. Research help businesses succeed: For businesses to survive and grow towards a successful path, a series of research would have to be conducted from the moment the business idea comes up throughout the lifespan of that business. This implies that little or no research has a high potential to direct a business towards the path of failure.
Every day, new products come into the market thereby setting themselves as competitors to existing businesses offering similar services and vice-versa. How these businesses, (the old and new inclusive) survive in the market, gain users and traction, and grow depends on the quality of research carried out.
Quality? Yes, quality and not quantity. These days, with the right persons in the team, businesses can carry out quality research, thanks to UX designers and researchers.

  5. Aids in finding opportunities: Through research, people can find and nurture their potential and achieve goals and dreams through opportunities that they come across during the course of the research activity.
Research can assist job seekers not only find jobs but help them know what they need to do, know or have to be unique in their quest of hunting for a job. This allows you to gain some advantage and the upper hand over peers who are in the same shoes just as you. It can also aid in having the knowledge to open means of gaining new skills and building new networks.

  6. Help boost the economy of a nation: Research goes a long way in boosting the economical values of a nation. The difference can be seen between developed countries and developing ones. These developed countries didn’t become developed all in one day, carrying out a series of research aided in the discovery of new ideas and technologies which have been implemented to better the lives of their citizens and beyond.
If developing countries would acknowledge the role research can play regarding the growth of their economy, lots of ideas would be discovered and major economic problems would be solved.

Although there could be a couple more reasons why research should be carried out, I will have to stop here. The main takeaway I believe every reader of this piece should go back to is that research is wider than specific people and professions. Research is for all, professionals and non-professionals so as to enrich themselves with facts and a better understanding of their knowledge based on certain topics and subjects, especially, if they are interested in such.
